An Introduction

About GTBKCW

Guru Teg Bahadur Khalsa College for Women (GTBKCW) is situated in the foothills of Shivalik Mountain range in Dasuya. Started in 1976 as an academy with the vision of imparting quality education to girls/women in the vicinity of ancient Pandav city Dasuya, the college got affiliation from the prestigious Panjab University Chandigarh in 1996. As an eponym of Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Ji, GTBKCW follows his principles and philosophy and has been putting undeviating efforts to fulfil the mission of becoming an educational hub for the girls of this rural kandi (geographically backward) area. At the time of its establishment, no women's college existed to educate the girls/women of nearby villages. The college proved to be a blessing for girls in general as well as girls of socially and economically deprived families.

GTBKCW has been a sovereign shrine of girls’ liberation. The testimonies of its achievements are a consecrated journey to the past. It is not only blocks and stones laid to shape a useful underlying unit. Fairly, every block has been nurtured by the sweat and blood of prominent personalities. The founding members of the institution are Dr. M.S. Randhawa, S. Sampuran Singh Cheema, Mahant Iqbal Singh, Mahant Arjun Singh, S. Harkamal Singh Saini, S. Saroop Singh Gill, S. Gurdip Singh Saini, S. Sawarn Singh Cheema, S. Darshan Singh Jakkowal.

The college had a limpid understanding of the educational efforts to be made for women's empowerment since its inception. The architects of the institute also had a vivid picture of the educational programs to be adopted for skill enhancement and holistic development of the personality of its students. In fact, the development of a balanced and harmonious personality has been promoted, emphasizing varied aspects of education such as Physical, Practical, Aesthetic, Moral, and Intellectual. The eminent scholars who have been a part of the institutions were also strong adherents of Guru Teg Bahadur Ji’s doctrine and they have infused the teachings of Guru Sahib in countless ways ensuring the spirit of sacrifice, devotion, and value-based education.

During the 1970s and 80s, women were deprived of education for varied reasons. The conservative norms of the social structure had confined girls as suitable merely for household tasks. Getting an education and an economically independent life was taboo for women. GTBKCW emerged not only as a saviour of their fundamental rights but also infused a sense of dignity and respect in them. The founder principal S. Gian Singh and principal Vijay Sharma immensely contributed to the growth of the institution and they believed that educating women was the sole way through which education could reach everyone. They toiled hard to bestir the steadfast society into educating women and thus make them self-reliant and independent. Principal, Vijay Sharma has been a paragon of excellence and she is also a constant guiding soul of this college. Her incessant efforts resulted in an awareness regarding the value of education for women and the dissemination of the teachings of our Guru and the values of our cultures to the masses.

Indeed, GTBKCW has left an unforgettable mark in providing value-based education and the emancipation of women. The first of its kind in the vicinity, the college has catered to the needs of society vis-à-vis women with every transition that occurred with time. Presently, the verdure campus of the college covers approx. 12 acres of land and its infrastructure consists of—few to mention among others—a Gurudwara sahib, Six Blocks (for administrative and academic purposes), a well-stocked library, splendid labs, lush green lawns, a magnificent playground, a sumptuous canteen, separate parking facilities, women hostel, and spacious gym. The institution encapsulates the dynamicity of progress as well as is an emblem of incessant vis-à-vis interminable efforts towards perfection. Each member of our institution is committed to the heritage of the institution and they follow the motto inside out: “Educating Women, Educating Society”.
